Brutalism

My housing here in Lund is in a building called University Guest House which can be found in a section of the city named Sparta.  The view from my window is precisely this sight. When one of the other guests there informed me that this is a particular architectural style called Brutalism, I decided to look it up and discovered that my view can be found online because this building is a well-known example of the style which was popular in the 60’s and 70’s.  There are other less unattractive specimens at hand online if anyone is interested and wants to check it out.  I had never heard of Brutalism in connection with architecture but am no expert in such things.  Inside the building my quarters are quite pleasant.

The University here is very old, dating back to the fifteenth century, and this picture is of the library, established in 1666,  where I just got my ID providing entry into all  spaces, including my office. The structure, designed by Alfred Hellerström in a style far removed from Brutalism, dates back to 1907, moved from the ancient kungshuset, the King’s house, where the need for space and poor conditions occasioned the librarian in the 17th Century to classify the books as follows: 1.wet or worm-eaten; 2) burned; 3) stained; 4) defective and 5)moth-eaten or all gone!

Today nothing there looked eaten by anything or defective. The adventure has started!
